Record breaking Haaland shows no signs of stopping

Erling Haaland’s goal against Everton on Sunday pushed his team nearer to the Premier League title while also bringing his personal goal tally to 36.

The Norwegian striker eclipsed the previous Premier League goalscoring record of 34 goals in a season, held by Alan Shearer and Any Cole, when he netted against West Ham on May the 3rd.

Most remarkedly, Cole and Shearer hit their 34 goals in 42 game seasons while Haaland has achieved his in a 38-game season, of which only 35 have so far been played.

Of those games Haaland has only started 32 of them with one substitute appearance off the bench. As per WhoScored.com, his total minutes on the pitch this season is 2673 which means he averages a goal every 74.25 minutes. With three games to go he shows no sign of stopping.

If we look at the data of the season so far, we can potentially see how many goals he will end on. If he carries on at the same rate as he has this season, he will score another 3 goals (3.63) which would see him finish on 39 goals.

The 22-year-old striker has said he is not focusing on personal records.

He told the Manchester City website: “"We cannot keep thinking of these records or I will become crazy in my head.

“You have to think of the next game and focus. The last games are now all finals."

This was evident when he recently let Ilkay Gundogan take a penalty in their 2-1 victory over Leeds. Haaland has scored 7 penalties in the league this year and he has yet to miss one. With the 40-goal mark now looming, Haaland’s competitive side may take over.

One issue that may prevent him from getting further goal is minutes on the pitch. With Arsenal losing against Brighton on Sunday, the Premier League title is firmly in City’s grasp.

Pep Guardiola may choose to rest Haaland, especially if they get past Real Madrid in Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final. With a potential Champions League final in sight and the league title sealed, they may wrap him up in the proverbial cotton wool.

Whatever goal tally he ends on, it has been a historic season for the striker in his first season in the Premier league. Only Mohammed Salah has come close to the record in his first season in the league for Liverpool, where he hit 32 goals.

Haaland has smashed that total and is edging closer to the 40-goal landmark.
